Christmas Joy
Since its formation in 1951 the choir has made 22 recordings, yet it is perhaps surprising that this, its 23rd, is the first featuring Christmas music. However it is due to Public demand that this omission is rectified and is a reflection of the popularity of the Choir's Annual Christmas Concerts, first established in 1991 by Conductor Marilyn J Smith in the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, and now a regular feature of the Phoenix Choir's calendar. This is no ordinary compilation of Christmas carols. It features music from various countries including "Esta Noche" from Spain, "O Tannenbaum" from Germany, "Go Tell It On the Mountain" from USA, "Iona" - a Hebridean carol, the evergreen English carol "The Twelve Days of Christmas", Ray Charles' up-tempo arrangement of "Jingle Bells", the classic "O Holy Night". Hoist's "Lullay My Liking", and a first recording of Tom Cunningham's "Merry Christmas Jazz", together with carols, traditional and modern from around Britain and Europe.
