Come sing with us!

This is a traditional concert performing choir split into the four voices of Soprano, Alto, Tenor and Bass, and whilst we are not an orchestral/theatrical chorus and neither are we a religious/church choir, we have elements of all of these and more in our catalogue. We have approximately 90 singing members of all ages and from all walks of life. Our youngest member is still a teenager and our most senior member an octogenarian. That said, you can never have too many singers!

But I can't read music!!

Contrary to popular belief you don't actually need to be able to read music to sing with us. Whilst some of our members do, and it is obviously an advantage, many more rely on recording the rehearsal on their MP3 or Minidisc players to help them learn their lines. We're used to having these devices shoved under our noses at rehearsals, so don't worry about that! The Members' Area of the website also contains downloadable mp3 files of each section's lines to help with learning new repertoire.

What about rehearsals?

During the concert season (usually mid August to the end of June) we rehearse every Monday evening from 7:30pm to 9:30pm in Adelaide's, 209 Bath St, Charing Cross, Glasgow (Bath St at Pitt St). If the concert season is particularly busy there may be occasional Wednesday evening rehearsals too. It is not unusual for our calendar to reach 30 or more concerts in our 46 week season and we actually performed 40 concerts in season 2006/7! Whilst we do expect a serious commitment most of us have day jobs, so it is accepted that there may be an occasion when you can't manage a rehearsal or concert. Occasionally we have "open rehearsals" where anyone can come along and see what we get up to. These are usually advertised in the local press, so keep a lookout.

Fringe Benefits...

Not only do you get to sing at rehearsals and concerts, you also get to tour with the choir at subsidised rates. If you've read about the choir in the Past Events or Tour sections you'll already know about some of our escapades! These include concerts throughout the UK, Tours throughout the UK and Ireland and occasional tours abroad (for most UK concerts and tours outside of the Glasgow area free transport is provided by private hire coach from Milngavie and Glasgow Buchanan St Bus Station, and occasionally Raith Interchange on the M74 as appropriate). There are usually two weekend tours in a season, for example, Germany in May 2007 followed by a tour of Orkney and the north of Scotland in September of the same year.

We also get to mix with the professionals occasionally too and in the past have accompanied Michael Crawford, provided chorus for the Gubbay Organisation and have even taken part in an episode of BBC Scotland's TV comedy "Still Game", to name but a few. As you will know if you've looked around our website we also make regular recordings - hard work, but all good fun.

What does Membership cost?

The Singing Members' annual subscription is currently £50, or if aged under 21, £25.

Do I have to buy my own music and uniform?

Music and uniform will be provided by the choir, though whilst gents will be supplied with both a black and a white concert jacket they are required to provide a white shirt, black trousers and black shoes, though we expect you've probably got those already!

So how do I join and what happens next?

Contact our Business Manager. Shortly after you will be contacted by our Choir Manager who will arrange a short private audition with our Conductor. (You'll be glad to know you don't have to audition in front of the whole choir!) Usually this takes the form of a few exercises to establish the range and quality of your voice, and you will be asked to bring along a piece of music of your own choice to sing too. Full details will be given by the Choir manager when they contact you. GOOD LUCK, and see you soon!
