Road to the Isles

1959, Parlophone PCS 3004

Scotland has a fine heritage of beautiful songs and sensitive singing. In Glasgow, industrial heart of Scotland, this tradition is being maintained by the fine performances of the Glasgow Phoenix Choir. This Choir, which was formed on the dissolution of the Glasgow Orpheus Choir, has in the short time since its inception become the foremost Choir in Scotland. It is inevitable that their repertoire should owe a debt to the Glasgow Orpheus Choir and its founder, Sir Hugh Roberton, but they have also found fresh fields to conquer as this record will show.

The fourteen titles chosen offer a wide selection of choral singing, from the vigour of the Dashing White Sergeant and Scots Wha’ Hae, the pawky humour of Willie Wastle, to the tender beauty of All In The April Evening and the lovely psalm tunes Crimond and Kedron. This record affords an opportunity to enjoy and judge the special contribution of Scotland to Choral singing.
